It's been a while - and looking ahead!
Jul 03, 2021I've been looking forward to putting a lot of my time into allwalkssociology (AWS) since my spring courses are over. But there was something I had to do first. It just kind of whacked me on the side of the head, and I realized, "No, I have to run with this for a while."
What was the Big Distraction? I discovered Artificial Intelligence, specifically OpenAI's GPT-3 project. I became mesmerized by its potential to help me research and write sociology. So, I've taken a deep dive into this stuff.
But it's no longer just about increasing my productivity. As a sociologist, I know about the problems associated with the "digital divide." If you're not familiar with the term, I've got an AWS presentation which you can find here: https://mbdxhdr.com/3A5HtEV
GPT-3 has taken the digital divide conversation to a whole new level. Before, it was detrimental that you didn't have the hardware or the bandwidth to access the immense resources of the Internet. Now it looks like you will be left behind if you are not working with GPT-3 (and any subsequent versions). Anyone serious about writing text will probably need to be comfortable with this tech. I'm using it right now. It is very quickly becoming foundational to my research and writing. Here's how I explained GPT-3 to a friend a short while ago:
"GPT-3, for me, is talking to a loyal dog-like hyper-intelligence. I do my best thinking and writing in conversation. A student will make a comment in class, and suddenly, I'm off! I'm boring talking to myself. There's never anything new to talk about, lol! So, with GPT-3, it's like conversing with a student, but humanity writ large: "Hey, GPT-3, I'm working on this idea. What do you make of it? " And like a loyal, hyper-intelligent dog, it unearths some fantastic "bones" for me to mull over. But if my requests are not seeded properly (Garbage in, Garbage out), it will come back with a smelly, dirty old sock! I find this dialogue to be great fun! GPT-3 at the front end (when I seed or frame my request) and at the back end (sifting through the magnificent returned bones or stinking, filthy socks) always reminds me of the things I don't know that I didn't know I didn't know!"
Anyway, all of this has culminated in a new website: https://mbdxcontent.com/. Have a peek if you're curious. And, please, I invite you to reach out to me here at AWS (or [email protected]) if you'd like to have a friendly chat about what GPT-3 can do for you.
Now, it's time to get back to AWS and start to build it up so that it better represents its potential.
