Popularizing Sociology
Jan 09, 2021If you've poked around allwalkssociology (hereafter AWS) a bit you've realized that this website is dedicated to popularizing sociology. Why this "bee in my bonnet?"
Well, after more than two decades of teaching the subject at the university level and then teaching a well-received free Intro Sociology course to the public, I've come to a rock-solid conviction. Which is? Our deeply troubled planet Earth, overrun by toxic and unsustainable human culture, needs a massive shift toward a far more sustainable worldview and way of life. And we needed that new culture yesterday!
So, that's the "why" for this website.
But, of course, the task ahead is enormous, well beyond any one person's current comprehension, never mind capacity. Thus the justification for this blog. What I mean is that as much as the AWS website must have a structure that helps to get the sociological "word" out as easily as possible, the content development behind the scenes is complex, dynamic, and ever-changing. How to deal with these vagaries and get quality stuff onto the website? This blog will help, I hope, to separate "noise" from what's really worth sharing and set the stage for doing so.
Blog posts will represent musings as I interact with lots of stuff in the form of notes and links to other sources of information. Those notes and links will be housed on Amplenote. My intention is to create a thorough publicly accessible Zettelkasten system of sociological information and knowledge that emerges from and supports the activities and resources on this website. Here's the first example:
I want to share all of this high-quality, far-reaching info with everyone. Through exploring this blog and the information behind it, I hope you'll enrich your thinking - and maybe even share it. Together, we can build social capital potentially capable of sustaining many folks. I hope you'll feel the urge to be a part of that. Here's a note on social capital:
A good-enough understanding of "social capital"
Speaking of building social capital, why not consider joining the AWS Community Forum and, with that, become part of the "Social Capital Network"? It's free! Once you're a member, you can participate in - or initiate - any community forum you like, remembering that this site is dedicated to the serious popularization and application of sociology, which Martin Luther King, Jr. thought of as True Compassion. So, these forums are respectful and safe places to exchange important ideas about our world and learn from each other. AWS aspires to be much more, for example, than Facebook! The conversation, learning, and mutual support all promises to be enjoyable and catalyzing!
What do you think? Are you in? Even if only to dip your toes in the swirling waters? I hope so! In some non-trivial way, the future of the world awaits!
